Halloween parties are coming up fast, so I thought I’d put together a little post to give you a few Halloween costume ideas. These are some of my favourite looks from years of Halloween and costume parties.
This year alone I put together 4 costumes – the last one will be revealed on Halloween. I can’t wait to share it with you! :)
Happy Halloween month!! (In this household we celebrate Halloween for a full month.)
It’s October, which means it’s officially acceptable to live out your childhood fantasies and dress up as your favourite characters. If you’re a longtime reader of the blog, you may remember that I’ve attempted this very Halloween costume before – 5 years ago. But two things have happened since then: Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, and my perfectionist tendencies ramping into overdrive. (more…)
Hello again! I took another little trip through time and thought I’d share it with you! My awesome, fellow-costume-party-enthusiast friend Katya had a birthday over the weekend, which meant: another fabulous theme party. This time? The roaring twenties.
Since I had already done a 1920s traditional flapper costume for a Christmas party a few years ago, I wanted to do something different this time around. Instead of going super dark and vampy, I took cues from Baz Luhrmann’s version of The Great Gatsby film – specifically, Daisy Buchanan’s party costume. (more…)
I happen to not be the only one of my friends who loves a good theme party. And thank goodness for that! On Saturday, my friend Katya threw a 1960s party at her penthouse condo. It was an absolutely fabulous night, full of cocktails, retro music, and dancing into the wee hours. In fact, I didn’t get home until almost 7 in the morning! Her condo is decorated mid-century modern, with 1960s movie posters and retro Coke ads adorning the walls. It felt like stepping into an episode of Mad Men.
The sixties – specifically the early and mid-sixties – is one of my favourite eras for fashion. I spent hours scouring the internet for the perfect retro dress, but didn’t find anything I was happy with. So I ended up putting together this look with items I already had in my closet, and hoped I could pull it off with the help of accurate 1960s hair and makeup. (more…)
Greetings from Themyscira! So, are you surprised I dressed up as Wonder Woman for Halloween this year? No? Huh.
Read on for all the details on this costume/cosplay, including all the product links, my tips and tricks, and photos of me pretending to fight things. (more…)
I’m baaaaack! And just in time for Halloween. You didn’t think I’d miss an opportunity to play dress up, did you? I’ve dressed up as many iconic fictional females, from Holly Golightly to Lara Croft to Hermione Granger to Belle. This year, I went for the original Disney princess: Snow White. (more…)
Halloween is one of the holidays I look forward to most each year. While many people like to embrace all things spooky and dark, I pretty much just love the excuse to dress up as one of my favourite characters. So, maybe that’s not quite the essence of Halloween, but… (more…)
With Halloween exactly one week away, I thought I’d give you 4 easy last-minute costume ideas, in the form of costumes I’ve done for Halloween and costume parties over the past few years. All of these costume can be made out of clothes you might already have in your closet. Add in a few choice accessories, and you have a Halloween costume! (more…)
The Roaring Twenties. The Prohibition Era. The Jazz Age. This year, our office Christmas party was 1920s-themed. The invitations were delivered, beautifully designed in Art Deco style. The gentlemen and ladies were instructed to pick an alias and “dress to kill” – we were going to a speakeasy. There would be an open bar, catered food, a casino, and dancing. What better way is there to end the year? (more…)
Last year, at Halloween, I dressed up as Disney’s Belle, from Beauty and the Beast, and Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The year before, I went as Hermione Granger. This year, I continued my trend of dressing up as my favourite fictional females, and went as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider from the video games and films. (more…)
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of my favorite classic films. It stars Audrey Hepburn and takes place in New York in the sixties. Plus, it’s so beautiful and romantic. What’s not to like?
For this year’s Halloween costume, I decided to dress up as Holly Golightly, Audrey Hepburn’s character in the film. It’s one of Audrey’s most iconic roles – and outfits. (more…)
Look. I know that Halloween is supposed to be about all things spooky. But the thing is: there are so few times we get to dress in costume, so when Halloween rolls around, I use it as an excuse to go all-out as one of my favorite fictional female characters. I guess that’s more cosplay than Halloween. *shrug*
Usually there are two opportunities per Halloween to dress up, so I reuse last year’s costume for one of them, and come up with a brand new costume for the other. Last year I went as Hermione Granger (a repeat from the year previous), and Belle, from Beauty and The Beast.
This year I did Belle (in her blue dress) and one other character. But you’ll find out about her in a few days. ;) (more…)
I think I’ve made it clear in my previous post that I love Halloween… a lot. And it comes only once a year! So I figured I’d make the most of it, and do two costumes on two separate nights. Tonight I dressed up as Hermione Granger, which really was just a great excuse to wear my Gryffindor tie and wand out in public. Plus, since I bought the official tie and wand for the final movie midnight screening last summer, I wanted to make the most of it, so I went as Hermione for Halloween last year, and am re-using the costume again this year (though I’ve altered it a tiny bit since last year’s). I like costumes that can be comprised mostly of things you already have, and then you just add a few items, and voila! It’s a costume.
I wore a white collared button-up shirt, Gryffindor tie, black pencil skirt, dark grey knee-high socks, black ankle booties, and accessorized with my wand. I kept my makeup as natural as possible, and curled and teased my hair to make it a bit fluffier. It was another comfortable costume, and I had a lot of fun tonight with my best friend. :)
