Brunch in the Afternoon

Brunch in the Afternoon - Sara du Jour

A little while ago, I hosted brunch at my apartment for a few of my closest friends. The great thing about hosting is that you get to set the rules of the game. In this case, it meant that for one day, everyone had to operate on Sara time.

That meant brunch – in the late afternoon. Three o’clock, to be exact. Why three? Because that meant I could wake up at one, take an hour(ish) to get ready and do some last minute tidying up around the house, and have another hour or so to do food prep before my guests arrived. Perfect.

Brunch is a super low-maintence thing to host. It doesn’t require hot food, so you don’t need to be sweating in the kitchen for hours beforehand. Here’s what I put together.

Fresh fruit is a necessity at any brunch. I went with watermelon slices, pineapple chunks, and strawberries – some of my favourites!

There were also fluffy, flaky mini croissants, because they are effortless and always a big hit.

I served small dishes of jam and dark chocolate peanut butter with those, in case anyone wanted to add a little somethin’ somethin’ to their croissants.

I also made a big bowl of vanilla yogurt, to which I added black and white granola (you might recognize from my Naturebox post) and a sprinkling of fresh berries.

Raspberry danishes, smeared generously with icing…

…and some open-faced bagel sandwiches, with herb and garlic cream cheese, heaps of smoked salmon, and garnished with a bit of red onion.

It’s a truly fantastic combination that I highly recommend. Somehow, the onion really ties everything together nicely.

To drink, we had iced coffee and a big pitcher of orange juice.

Everyone dug in, buffet style, and ate yummy yummy breakfast foods to their heart’s content. (Breakfast is the best meal of the day, regardless of the time, if you ask me!)

It was the first time Wendy and Monica got to meet Darcy, and I’m not sure which of them enjoyed it more.

I was practically ignored for the first twenty minutes, while Darcy got all the lovin’. I just sat there, jealously munching on a croissant, waiting for them to turn some affections my way.

Actually, I know who enjoyed it the most.

Darcy did. Look at him, having the time of his life with all the ladies fawning over him. Lucky boy.

Another perk of hosting brunch? Enjoying the leftovers the next morning! xx
